ISO 9001 is a general quality management system standard applicable to any organisation in any industry. It certifies that the organisation has documented quality processes, customer focus, and a commitment to continuous improvement. It is not healthcare-specific.

What It Covers

ISO 9001 addresses quality management principles including customer focus, leadership, process approach, improvement, evidence-based decision making, and relationship management. In a healthcare context, it confirms that the organisation has documented procedures for its operations.

Limitations

ISO 9001 does not assess clinical quality, patient safety, or medical outcomes. A factory, a law firm, and a hospital can all hold ISO 9001. It confirms process documentation, not clinical excellence. ISO 13485 (medical devices) and ISO 15189 (medical laboratories) are different, more specific standards.

Renewal and Validity

ISO 9001 certificates are typically valid for three years, with annual surveillance audits. Certification is issued by accredited certification bodies, not by ISO directly.

If a clinic claims this accreditation but does not appear in the public register, ask for the certificate number and expiry date. Contact the accrediting body directly to confirm.
