Why: Allows independent verification of their licence to practise.
How many years has the surgeon been performing this specific procedure?
Why: Volume and experience correlate with outcomes.
Is the clinic currently accredited by JCI or a national accreditation body? Can you provide the certificate number?
Why: Accreditation claims can be verified against the issuing body’s database.
Is the clinic’s corporate registration active? What is the registration number?
Why: Dissolved or recently re-registered entities are a warning sign.
Cost
Can I have a fully itemised quotation in writing, specifying everything included and excluded?
Why: Verbal quotes are unenforceable. Written itemisation prevents unexpected charges.

Complications
What is your complication rate for this procedure?
Why: Clinics tracking their outcomes can answer this. Those that cannot may not be monitoring quality.
If a complication occurs while I am in-country, what happens? Who covers the additional costs?
Why: Understanding the financial and clinical pathway for complications before they happen.
Do you have 24-hour emergency cover and an ICU on site?
Why: For surgical procedures, access to emergency care is a safety baseline.
Records
Will I receive a written record of the procedure, materials used, and medications prescribed?
Why: Essential for continuity of care with your home doctor.
If implants or prosthetics are used, will I receive the brand, model, batch number, and size in writing?
Why: Required for future servicing, warranty claims, or emergency care.
Can I obtain copies of my imaging and lab results to take home?
